image: Michael Sowa, from The Little King
She watched the little fat King
as she stirred her coffee.
He pulled at the newspaper
regally flipping the pages,
reading aloud choice pieces.
His gown sweeping text,
scepter pointing out gems,
ones to make her smile.
She sipped at the coffee,
her fourth.
Another sleepless night
spent alone - but for him.
He was a cheerful little fellow
no airs or graces
always appearing
when she needed him most.
As she swallowed her last sip
he took off his crown
and placed it on her finger.
It sparkled and glowed
sending a warm feeling surging through her,
till it disappeared -
along with her King.
And she yawned sleepily
eyes growing tired
and took herself back to bed.

Quite a night. Great words.
If she can sleep after all that coffee she's a miracle!
Fun poem, it reads very realistically. Perhaps you have experienced this state of affairs?
A wonderful, magical little tale. I loved it. :-)
i wouldn't mind having a crown slipped onto my finger!
This is really touching. Wonderful.
Interesting atmosphere in this one. I too thought a magical woman drinking four cupsa and then going back to bed but there may be much more to this story.
nicely said... nicely composed...
i like it...

"...he took off his crown
and placed it on her finger." Very nice.
Bit of a daydreamer, then Deborah? Loved your dreamboat king. ♥

Aw he put his crown on her finger, cute story!
Excellent write! Sweet and engaging. I rather like your king. :)
I liked the image of him putting his crown on her finger. My Magpie 86 entry is Cepheus.
I love it!
love the fantasy in this
Well done...again!
Adorable read. Coffee, they say, can sometimes put you to sleep instead of keeping you awake.
wow...what a wonderful night... and magical words that you describe the whole situation...brilliant :)

Lovely spin on the prompt... I could use a king like that.
I love your take on the prompt! Magical.
The use of gems is a gem!
A lovely read. I love the meander I took through this tale :)
Your Magpie had a sleepy, dreamy, nice rhythym to it --- nice!
So this would be that really dreamy state when we are not quite sure if its real or not... smiles....
Thank you for your lovely comments everyone :o) x
I just fell in love with The Little King in the image and now that you have brought his personality to life, I love him all the more. The touch with the crown on her finger is sublime. Great magpie.

ha....wonderful tale...
Oh my ... you have made him out to be such a sweet guy. I really liked him!
Utterly captivating. Some in their loneliness talk to themselves, she however created a fantasy world to cope. A great piece of work.
that is just the right sweet for a romance...
Thank you so much, it's lovely to read your comments :o) x
I liked the crown on her finger - it worked like a sleeping draught!
